More about the Upper Arkansas Conservation District…
Our Mission & History
Since 1942, the Upper Arkansas Conservation District (UACD) has worked alongside local ranchers, farmers, and landowners to protect and enhance the natural resources of Central Colorado. Established under Colorado’s Soil Conservation Law, UACD is one of 78 conservation districts in the state. We operate as a political subdivision of Colorado, governed by a locally elected Board of Supervisors dedicated to serving the needs of our land-based communities.
Our District
The UACD covers 666,047 acres, primarily in Chaffee County, with portions extending into western Fremont, Saguache, and Park Counties. Our district boundaries were formed by landowner petition and reflect a strong, grassroots commitment to conservation. We serve a diverse landscape that includes private, state, and federal lands—rangelands, forests, irrigated fields, urban edges, and high mountain wilderness.
What We Do
UACD helps landowners and communities manage soil, water, forests, and wildlife habitat by coordinating resources and partnerships across local, state, and federal levels. We focus on locally led, practical solutions to conservation challenges, and have a strong history of successful collaboration and producer engagement.
Investing in the next generation
We also invest in the next generation of stewards by offering educational workshops, participating in local events, and supporting youth in 4-H by awarding scholarships to students pursuing careers in agriculture and natural resources.
