Conservation led by individuals who believe decisions affecting our natural resources are best made by the people who are closest to those resources ~ the people in the local community.

Upper Arkansas Conservation District’s Mission

What We Do

Since Conservation Districts were established by Colorado Soil Conservation Law in 1937, the Upper Arkansas Conservation District has led the effort to protect and enhance agricultural lands, range lands and wilderness. The District consists of private, State, and Federal lands and includes rangeland, non-irrigated pasture, and irrigated fields as well as recreational, urban, and mined lands.

As one of 3000 conservation districts nationwide, and one of 78 conservation districts in Colorado, the Upper Arkansas Conservation District helps people manage land, water, forests, wildlife habitat, and related natural resources. We coordinate assistance from public, private, local, state, and federal resources to develop locally-driven solutions for natural resource concerns. We value collaboration and seek both traditional and out-of-the-box solutions to the challenges and issues we face.

Education is a vital part of our mission. We conduct workshops and participate in local events, talking to folks about conservation and soil health. We also work with 4-H to support the next generation of conservationists through scholarships and other educational opportunities.

“A nation that destroys its soils, destroys itself.”
— Franklin D. Roosevelt, 1937

1. Use plant diversity to increase diversity in the soil.

2. Manage soils more by disturbing them less.

3. Keep plants growing throughout the year to feed the soil.

4. Keep the soil covered as much as possible.
